Principal’s Weekly Update

Many, many thanks to our generous community members who supported our annual Tree Sale, Bake Sale and “Super Saturday” events. It was a beautiful day with so much positive energy. Our industrious students participated in a variety of STEM activities with Ross teachers and made over 500 sandwiches for Martha’s Table. We are grateful to the Connecticut Ave/Chevy Chase Safeway for donating many of the food items. Our feathered friends will enjoy the birdseed treats created by Ms. Lee and some of our young learners. My family indulged in delicious homemade baked goods we purchased at the sale and had fun decorating our tabletop tree.

OSSE STAR Report Card
DC schools recently received their OSSE STAR report card ratings for the 2018-19 school year.
I am pleased to announce that Ross maintained a four star rating and is striving to continually improve with sights on earning five stars.
Please see the attached letter for more information and please join me for a parent meeting on Friday, December 13 at 8:00am in Room 205 if you wish to learn more about the STAR ratings.

LSAT Meeting Reminder
The December LSAT meeting is Thursday, December 19 at 7:45am in the Ross library.
Observers are always welcome to attend.

MySchoolDC Lottery
The lottery opens on Monday, December 16.
Students who are currently enrolled at Ross DO NOT need to enter the lottery to remain at Ross. Current 5th graders have a right to attend Cardozo EC or SWW@Francis-Stevens for 6th grade without entering the lottery. Current 5th graders who live outside of the Ross boundary also have a right to attend the in-boundary school assigned to their address without entering the lottery.
If you have an incoming PK4 student, please reach out to Principal Searl so we can have an estimate of the number of in-boundary siblings in our midst.
Current PK4-4th grade families, if you plan to apply out, please notify Principal Searl for enrollment management purposes.

Holiday Tree & Bake Sale Thanks!
The PTA seconds Principal Searl’s praise for all of the volunteers who made this weekend’s fundraisers successful; special thanks to our Tree Sale Co-Chairs, Mark & Michael MacEwan, and Charles Francis; Bake Sale Co-Chairs, Laura Tischler, & Jenny & John McAllister; as well as to Mr. Shegda, who not only loaned us his truck to use for deliveries, but also did deliveries on Saturday!  It was a true team effort and the PTA appreciates all of your hard work!

This year’s fundraising Auction will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 7-10pm at the Human Rights Campaign.  This is the biggest fundraiser for our school and we are looking for more volunteers to help with procuring items for the silent and live auction.  Please come out to join us in planning a fun & special evening; we will have pizza and kids are welcome.  Email with any questions.

Please also remember to send your best pics of all school events that you may have & spread the word to your friends and family too. You can email the pics to:

And don’t forget about our Sock Drive- we are looking for packs of 6 for men, women or children. There is a box in your child’s classroom for the collection. The winning class will win a Hot Chocolate Party with Ms. Juriga in the library.

Thank you for your support.
