Principal’s Weekly Update
Thank you for attending Parent/Teacher conferences. If you did not attend a conference, please contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment. We strive to meet with 100% of our families.

Learning Celebrations
At Ross, we host quarterly “Learning Celebrations” in each classroom to mark the end of each advisory and highlight student learning.  Our first advisory celebration is Friday, November 1.
Students look forward to welcoming their families and sharing their work.
You will meet in your child’s classroom at the scheduled time.
PK4: 8:45am
K-3: 9:00am
4-5: 9:45am (students have specials from 9:00-9:45)

Monthly Cultural Recognitions
We closed out Hispanic Heritage Month with a beautiful fashion show featuring our own Ross students. We are still seeking parent volunteers to help coordinate the bulletin board and programming for the remaining months of the school year. Please review the list below and speak with parents of your child’s classmates to identify a monthly recognition to support. We need your creativity and commitment. The Hispanic Heritage month board was coordinated by parent Patricia Villamil and features art work made by Ross students after school. Two after school programs, Latin Percussion and the Fashion Show were coordinated by Sr. Stewart and we participated in the Fiesta DC Parade.

November: National American Indian and Alaska Heritage Month
December: Seasons of Light (Hanukkah, Kwaanza, Christmas and Solstice)
January: Lunar New Year (year of the rat)
February: Black History Month
March: Women’s History Month
April: National Poetry and Library Month

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Oratorical Contest
Please find information attached regarding an upcoming oratorical competition that might be of interest for students in grades 1-5. If you plan to have your child participate, please select the passage or text you will recite and let Principal Searl know. Ms. McCoy and Principal Searl will be available to help children rehearse at school. We can send up to three children per grade level to the competition. Parents will need to accompany their child to their scheduled competition appointment.

MySchoolDC  News
The School EXPO is Saturday, December 14 from 11:00am until 3:00pm at the Stadium Armory.
The MySchoolDC lottery opens on Monday, December 16.
New this year: Stevens Early Learning Center (a DCPS city-wide infant/toddler and PK program) is opening and will be part of the MySchoolDC lottery. Please see attached for information about the proposed programming.
If your child is applying out to private/independent schools and requires teacher recommendation forms and/or records, please note that we submit forms directly to the receiving school and we ask for a two-week completion window. Please bring addressed, stamped envelopes to Ms. Campbell in the main office.

Dear Ross Families:

Thank you to the 75% of Ross families who have joined the PTA to date and congratulations to Ms. Lee’s PK4 class, the Excellent Elephants, for reaching the 100% membership target.  Thank you, PK4 families!  PK4 will get either a special free dress day or an extra recess.  Note that there is still a chance for one more class to win a prize for 100% membership.

As a very small school, Ross needs help from every family to meet its fundraising and community-building goals.  The money raised by the PTA pays for things like paper, equipment, field trips, and special events.  In turn, this enables Principal Searl to invest more of her DCPS budget into keeping student-to-teacher ratios low in every classroom by hiring and retaining the top-notch, deeply committed educators that our children benefit from so greatly.  In addition, the funds raised by the PTA enable us to hold community-building events such as the upcoming Spooktacular and Movie Night.  Would you please take a moment to join the PTA now, before it slips your mind?  You will find suggested membership levels in the attached link,, but we accept any amount to join the PTA, even $1.00.  The most important thing is to show support for your child and his or her teachers by joining and participating in PTA-sponsored events.  Thank you!

Please note that we have restocked our Ross merchandise; please email or stop in if you need a size that was previously out!

PAL Pajama Party
Please join Ms. Juriga this Sunday, October 27 from 2:00-3:00 pm at the West End Library for story time with a comfort dog!

This year’s Spooktacular will take place on the Ross playground and field on Wednesday, October 30th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. All Ross families are invited to attend!  Bring your costumes and your walking shoes for a parade around the neighborhood starting at 6:15.  We will have pizza to purchase, dancing, a photo booth, and other festivities.  We need volunteers for set-up, clean-up, and helpers during the event. To sign up, go to:
Please note that in an effort to encourage kids to stay with parents, this year’s parade will once again be organized by grade level.  If you have children in multiple grades, feel free to choose the best grade for your family or designate another parent as chaperone.  We are looking for at least one parade ambassador per class; please sign up in the link if you can help.  Also, if you have decorations for us to use for the event, please contact Kate Gardner.
Thank you, and looking forward to seeing you at Spooktacular!

Ross PTA Screen on the Green

Please join us Wednesday, November 6th following our second General Body PTA meeting for our annual Screen on the Green.  We will have pizza, popcorn, and hot chocolate for sale; picnics are welcome!  The Storybook Trolley will be in for a visit that afternoon and evening for book shopping and the Ross Yearbook Club will host a Bake Sale, too.  We will start the film (tbd) at sunset and hope you can join us; bundle up!
