PTA Holiday Tree Sale & Bake Sale
On behalf of the PTA board, I want to thank the Ross community for your wonderful support in making our tree & bake sale fundraiser a huge success.  We could not have had this success without those who volunteered to sell trees and deliver trees; those who donated trees to families in need, and those who helped spread the word about our 11th annual tree sale:

Thank you to those who baked or provided a variety of delicious treats, and those that came and bought them.

Special thank you goes to Mr. Shegda and Phil Palmer, who drove and coordinated tree delivery all weekend and also to our bake sale chairs, Laura Tischler & Jenny & John McAllister.  While we are still number crunching (and hoping for more sales this coming weekend), we are predicting a very profitable fundraiser to enrich the education of our Ross students.

Friends of Fillmore
The Fillmore Arts Center has its own separate PTO called the Friends of Fillmore (FOF) that is made up of parents from Ross, Key and Stoddert Elementary Schools.  They fill gaps in supplies, support the Fillmore teachers and advocate for Fillmore Arts Center.
The current team officers’ of the Friends are parents of older children who will soon be leaving the program.  Friends of Fillmore is looking for parents who are interested in becoming officers so that this PTO can continue their important work. The commitment in time and effort is less than a regular school PTO.  If you are willing to help or are interested in finding out more you can contact the current Board Chair John Claud at facboardchair@gmail.com or Debra Olson at debraolson2@yahoo.com

Healthy Students Amendment Act Update
Dear fellow parents,
CONGRATULATIONS to all of you who asked the DC Council for change and got it! On December 4, the council unanimously passed the Healthy Students Amendment Act, which contains several things to celebrate. For example, it embraces the Good Food Purchasing Program, a values-based procurement standard, calls upon DCPS to explore establishing a central kitchen facility, requires DCPS to serve vegetarian, preferably plant-based options at every meal, and updates physical activity and sodium requirements (compensating for the just-completed rollback of sodium standards at the federal level).
The fact that the education committee read our letter and amended the bill to make it stronger just goes to show that when we parents stick our neck out together, our voice can be heard. Of course, this is just a beginning and you can still fill out this form (or email me) if what DC kids eat (your own and others) matters to you, and you want to see the best possible implementation of this new law.
Here are some media reports on the passage of the Healthy Students Amendment Act that you can share with your friends and family to let them know what you helped accomplish:
