Why do we use a K/1 model at Ross?

We have used the K1 model at Ross since 2016*.  In this model, Kindergarten-age and 1st grade-age children form one classroom community of young learners.  With the exception of math instruction (the only academic area taught according to grade level), all students in a classroom learn the same content and work on the same types of skills, with differentiated instruction provided for all students based on ability level, not age.  We have witnessed impressive academic gains using this model.  Additionally, students experience great emotional and social growth as they engage in the two-year K1 cycle, first as younger students with many older, supportive student mentors, and then as older students, who serve as role models to their younger friends.  Lastly, students benefit greatly from having the same lead teacher for two consecutive years, which allows for teachers to build strong connections with students and families, leading to even more consistent growth over time.
* With the exception of a one-year break when the pandemic forced us to start the year virtually.
