Principal’s Weekly Update
Week of September 1, 2019
We enjoyed a great opening week. It was fun to observe students making new friends and reconnecting with old ones as they explored the new playground and field. We are all adjusting to being back on our school schedule and look forward to a productive autumn. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Back to School Nights this week and at the Potluck Picnic next week.
After School Clubs
After School Clubs for Grades 3-5 will begin the week of September 9. The club options were reviewed with students and they received a take-home flier and permission slip today. If you are interested in Cross Country (Grades 4-5) speak directly to Mr. Shegda. Girls on the Run (Grades 3-5) is full and currently has a waiting list.
Please complete the DCPS Volunteer Clearance process if you plan to chaperone field trips and/or volunteer at school. Information can be found here: https://dcps.dc.gov/page/volunteer-our-schools Please note that the clearance is good for two years. Bring your completed clearance to Ms. Campbell in the main office.
Absences from school are only excused for illness, medical appointments and court ordered appearances. To have your child’s absence excused, we must receive a written note within five days of the absence. If your child is absent or tardy due to a medical appointment, you must bring a note from the medical office upon your return to school. If your child is absent more than four times total in a marking period, you must bring official documentation for the fifth and all future absences for that marking period. Please note that DCPS does not excuse absences for family vacations and travel. Please notify your child’s teacher of absences and send excuse notes directly to Ms. Campbell (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Ms. McCoy (Marketta.McCoy@k12.dc.gov) They can also provide you with further details regarding the DCPS attendance policy.

Dear Ross Families:
We hope your children had a wonderful first week of school; it was lovely seeing many of you at drop-off. We will continue to staff a PTA membership & merchandise table on Thursday & Friday mornings this week so do drop by and say hello. Please see my welcome letter on the PTA page of the Ross website for more information about all that the PTA does for the Ross teachers, staff, and students. We hope everyone will join the PTA and support our efforts. A few updates are below.
Kate Gardner on behalf of the PTA EB, 2019-2020
- School Supply Packages
- For those of you who are new to Ross, all children are to have purchased school supply packages through the PTA for $100 per student. The PTA then distributes that money to the teachers and staff to purchase what they need for each student and classroom (which also relieves us parents from making trips to various stores to purchase needed materials). To date, there are still some families that have not purchased supply packages which means the PTA is currently losing money. Please order your child’s school supply package now here. The PTA will not be able to offer centralized school supply packages in future years if we do not at least break even on this project. If you have any questions, please email.
- Join the PTA!
- We hope that every Ross family joins the PTA and aim for 100% participation each year. We have suggested membership levels with Ross merchandise gifts as a special thank you for your support. All donations are appreciated and can be paid either monthly or annually. The Ross PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your donation is fully tax-deductible.
First General Body Meeting & Back to School Potluck Picnic, 5:30pm – 8:00pm, Wednesday, September 11th:
