Principal’s Weekly Update
We look forward to seeing everyone at our first PTA meeting of the year and the Back to School Potluck picnic. Please note that students must be under the supervision of adults at the picnic.
They may not attend on their own.

PARCC Scores
Individual student scores were sent home Monday via backpack mail. Please note that we do not receive additional details regarding your child’s performance beyond what is in the report you received.

Kids Ride Free
See Ms. Campbell in the Ross office to obtain your new KRF card for students in grades K-5 for the 2019.20 school year. Cards from last year will stop working at the end of the month.
You can use the card to travel to/from school on public transportation. The cards are also required for many Ross field trips this year. Please be sure to write your child’s name on the card with a permanent marker.

Lunch and School Meal Reminder
Ross is a NUT FREEcampus. Please do not send any nut products in your child’s lunch or snacks. Please do bring snacks with nuts to the playground after school.
If you need an ID number to set up your child’s lunch account, please contact Ms. Campbell in the main office. Kyndal.campbell@dc.gov
Information about setting up a lunch account and paying for meals is here: https://dcps.dc.gov/page/meal-prices-and-payment

Safe Bodies and Safe Words
Ms. McCoy, our Social Worker and I have visited classrooms to talk with students about safe bodies and safe words.  We discussed “good touch, bad touch” and the importance of reporting unsafe body situations to trusted adults. We also discussed using language that builds people up. We reviewed language from the DC Human Rights Act of  1997 with upper grade students to highlight all areas (race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, familial status, family responsibility, political affiliation, source(s) of income, disability and place of residence) that are protected under anti-discrimination law. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Ms. McCoy Marketta.mccoy@k12.dc.gov

Attendance Reminders
In order for your child’s absence to be excused for illness or medical appointments, you must submit an absence note within five days of the absence. Please note that family trips are not excused. Please find a DCPS absence note attached. They are also available in the main office.

Immunization Reminders
Please maintain up to date immunizations and return all health forms to the nurse.
For more information about immunizations, please visit: https://dchealth.dc.gov/service/immunization

Please see other announcements and news below, including on our Fall Membership Drive Class Competition!

Join the PTA: Class Competition
Each September, we have a friendly competition among grades with the first two classes to reach 100% participation not only win school spirit bragging rights, but also either an extra free dress day or recess.  I’m pleased to announce that around 70 families, 40% of families at Ross have joined the PTA.  The Dancing Dolphins (aka Ms. Cornwall’s class) are in the lead, with the Excellent Elephants (PK4) close behind (see above!).  Please consider joining the PTA; we are a small school that relies on the active support of parents.  All donations are appreciated and can be paid either monthly or annually.  The Ross PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your donation is fully tax-deductible.

Community News
The Keegan Theater is looking for a few more students for its Thursday after school classes for 3rd-5th graders. It is a really fun program with a performance at the end of the term!  Keegan Theater will pick the kids up from Ross at 3:30 after school on Thursdays and walk them to the theater on Church Street.
If you are interested, here is the link to register:  https://keegantheatre.com/playrahka/prk-classes/
You can also contact Alexis Hartwick, Director of Education and Administration with any questions at ahartwick@keegantheatre.com

School Supply Packages
Have you paid for school supplies yet?  For those families new to Ross, all students are asked to purchase school supply packages through the PTA for $100 per student.  The PTA gives the money to the teachers and staff to purchase what they need for each student and classroom, which also saves parents a trip to the store.  Please order your child’s school supply package here

Volunteer Clearance
Ross students enjoy field trips and enrichment experiences throughout the school year, but we need you to have volunteer clearance through DCPS to chaperone your child’s field trips.  Please click here to complete the volunteer clearance process.

IMPORTANT DATES:
