Pre-K Families

We are so happy to have you and your child join our school community. Below are answers to frequently asked questions by New Pre-Kindergarten families.

What is the class size?

PK4 class size is capped at 20 students in DCPS with one teacher and one aide. 

What can we expect at drop off and pick up?

School hours are 8:45am-3:15pm. Parents/Caregivers may begin drop-off directly into the classroom between 8:30-8:45am. Pick-up is directly from the classroom between 3:15-3:30pm. 

Is before and after school care offered?

Ross does not offer before school care. Aftercare is provided by the EDCJCC. They walk students from Ross to their location on 16th Street. Learn more by clicking here

What are meals like at Ross?

Breakfast is free for students and is served in the classroom beginning at 8:30am.  

Students may bring a home lunch (nut-free) or eat school lunch, which is also served in the classroom. If your child requires dietary accommodations, please refer to the following information here.

What additional classes are provided in addition to the academic day?

PK4 students have recess twice a day, Health/Physical Education and Art twice a week, and Music and Library once a week. There is a 60-90 minute rest period daily.  

What is the attendance policy?

All PK4 students should attend school regularly, according to DCPS Attendance policies. Please note that family vacations/travel are not excused absences. 

What is Ross's dress code?

Ross does not have a school uniform. PK4 students should wear clothing that is comfortable and that children can independently manage when toileting. Children should wear closed-toe athletic shoes. 

Is there a restroom in the PK4 classroom?

Yes, there is a bathroom in the classroom for exclusive PK4 student use. 

How is PK4 progress monitored?

Student progress is evaluated according to the GOLD Strategies framework. Families will receive a written progress report four times a year in addition to Parent/Teacher conferences. You can find out more here.

What if my child requires medication during the school day?

Students who need medication administered or stored at school should communicate with School Nurse.

I believe my child might require learning or development support, what are my next steps?

If you believe your child requires learning or developmental support, please contact our Child Find contact, Grace Ratner or Early Stages to refer your child. 

What supplies do we need to provide?

Most school supplies are funded through the Ross PTA. They ask for a voluntary donation to offset the cost (click here). Other requested items (rest mat, daily snacks, family photo, etc) will be communicated by the teacher. 

K-5 Families

What are school hours?

School hours are 8:45am-3:20pm.

What can we expect for drop off and pick up?

 Parents/Caregivers may begin drop-off at 8:20 for morning recess. Do not leave children early unless you can directly supervise them. Dismissal begins at 3:20pm from the Ross field. Classes will line up by grade level.

Is before and after care provided at Ross?

Ross does not offer before school care. Aftercare is provided by the EDCJCC. They walk students from Ross to their location on 16th Street. Click here for more information or click here to see other after school opportunities.

Students may bring a home lunch (nut-free) or eat school lunch. Lunch is 30 minutes a day, usually following the 30 minute recess. If your child requires dietary accommodations, please click here for further information. 

What are specials and recess like at Ross?

Students have a daily 30 minute recess, Health/Physical Education and Art twice a week, and Music and Library once a week.  

What is Ross's dress code?

Ross does not have a school uniform. Students should wear clothing that is comfortable and that young children can independently manage when toileting. Children should wear closed-toe athletic shoes for safe play at recess and PE. 

What restrooms are available to students?

All bathrooms at Ross are gender neutral, single stalls.
