Engineers are creative, resourceful problem-solvers. Show off your design skills and check out some epic engineering!
Challenge Accepted!
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: Take a cardboard box and create something new out of it that serves a purpose. You can take parts away or add to it using other materials around your house. Remember, engineers brainstorm and create a plan before building!
Virtual Field Trip
VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP: Our virtual field trip uses Google Earth to take us to epic, triangular architecture around the world! If you designed a building, would you make it triangular? Click the image to zoom around the globe. If you’re on a phone or iPad, you will need to download the free app here. Make sure to scroll through the photos and read the descriptions as well.
Podcast
Brains On! is one of my favorite podcasts. Perfect podcast for the curious! Click the image to listen about the history of elevators and how they work!
Phenomenon
Today’s phenomenon takes a closer look at this interesting invention. Click the image to watch it in action. What do you notice about the design and how it’s used? What do you wonder? What ideas does it spark for you, engineers?
STEM Story
Our STEM stories bring us right back to our box challenge! Grab your imagination and follow the links to listen to “Boxitects” by Kim Smith, “What to do with a Box?” by Jane Yolen and Chris Sheban, and “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis.
Bonus!
BONUS: I wanted to share an amazing, free course on Kahn Academy: IMAGINEERING IN A BOX. “Have you ever wondered how theme parks come to life? Disney Imagineers from hundreds of career disciplines around the world share how they use a wide range of skills – from story development and conceptual design to math, physics, and engineering – that all come together to create immersive experiences. Imagineering in a Box allows you to explore different aspects of theme park design, from characters to ride development, as you design a theme park of your very own.”
